About Jim Slakov

Jim Slakov started woodworking in 1982 nestled away in in Whitehorse YT. What started as an interest built into a career that would bring him through Vancouver BC and on to the small town of Sechelt on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. Tucked away in the town of West Sechelt the serene nature setting offers the concentration and inspiration for Jim’s woodworking masterpieces.

Years of experience have built Jim’s passions to include custom furniture, stair-designs, countless cabinets and even a 20′ sailboat. Special attention to joinery and finish give Jim’s creations inimitable aspects of detail and perfection.

The combination of local and exotic woods gives a strong element of contrast to many of Jim’s pieces offering focal point and eye catching designs. This is accomplished through the careful selection and combination of materials plus meticulous finish. Combined with natural aspects of texture and shape these creations are a melding of sophistication and authentic design. Jim’s personal favorite materials include local Big Leaf Maple, Arbutus and finishing using a Maloof inspired linseed/tung/urethane and beeswax mixture.

Looking closely at Jim’s work and style the influence of Sam Maloof , Wendell Castle , Robert Whitley , and Michael Fortune among many others can be picked out. The individual techniques of each influence has been a key building block in Jim’s extensive portfolio.
